Va-Va-Vanilla – How to make Vanilla Extract

My good friend Renee gave us incredibly aromatic and delicious vanilla extract that her parents brought back from a trip to Mexico.  I splash this into my morning vanilla latte and it’s fantastic!

Since I ran out, I was thrilled to find the exact same brand online, but just before purchase I read that the making of this vanilla isn’t exactly regulated and the ingredients might be more chemical than the real thing.

I found real vanilla beans available from the Arizona Vanilla Company, with beans grown in Mexico.  I bought 12 beans from them right away.  Then I found another company:  Amadeus Trading Company, which sells certified organic vanilla beans from Uganda.  I went a little overboard and bought ¼ pound of Uganda Gold vanilla beans from them too.

I have Organic Prairie Vodka to soak the beans in to make the extract and glass bottles from Target.  It’s time to make my own vanilla extract!

On the left are the Mexican beans from the Arizona Vanilla Company and on the right are Uganda Gold beans from the Amadeus Trading Company.

Directions:  Snip off the ends of each bean, slice the beans lengthwise, scrape out the ‘caviar’ and then chop up the rest of the vanilla bean.  We put 12 beans in 1.6 cups vodka.  Now we’ll shake this elixir daily (or whenever we remember) for 6 months or so, and we’ll have a near endless supply of vanilla extract.

This time Uganda Gold vanilla beans are on the left and the Mexican beans from the Arizona Vanilla Co. are on the right.  We’ll get pretty bottles and labels perhaps in time for giving these as Christmas gifts.  It’s really satisfying to know exactly what ingredients are in this extract.  Since I’m sure I went overboard with plenty of vanilla beans, I’m looking forward to this being extra, extra potent.  Hello lattes and everything Vanilla!

Thanks Elizabeth! I read that after 6 mo. the extraction is pretty much done, so I’ll filter out the pieces around Halloween time. Thanks for taking a peek at the blog!

This is awesome! Do you need to filter out the beans at some point?

Kurt Stein – Oshkosh, Wisconsin Musician

Kurt Stein, Oshkosh area musician, is a creative tornado of energy, pacing back and forth while conjuring up and sharing ideas – BIG IDEAS!   Big, awesome, creative, rock star, stellar ideas!  -The kind of ideas that get the whole community involved in enrichment, arts, music and more.

For the photo shoot my idea was to shoot Kurt in the midst of a rocky trout stream, essentially in the middle of a river.  Kurt’s idea, one that would nicely preserve his pricey instruments, was to shoot with an old decrepit house in the background.  Lucky for us, our neighbors are awesome and always willing to give a thumbs up for a wild art endeavor.

Stay tuned for Kurt, aka Burt Klein, a man of mystery, a man of many talents, with the ability to play nearly any instrument.  Usually you’ll find him behind his upright bass playing in various jazz bands around the Valley.  On April 20th you can find Kurt, ahem -Burt Klein, Jazz Vampyre playing at Beckets in Oshkosh, WI.  As always during a Burt Klein show, he will be backed by the Arkestra of the Undead.  It’s part comedy, part music, and all Kurt.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin Wedding

I’ll be honest – I have one thing in the forefront of my mind when it comes to photographing a wedding and my focus is always:  Spectacular photos that will delight the bride and groom.  To that end, I push the envelope a bit and that’s often key to making photographs that go ‘the extra mile’.

Only this time, pushing the envelope meant the bride, Ryen, and all the bridesmaids were outside in the cold in Wisconsin, in November wearing thin, sleeveless dresses with bare backs.  Surprisingly, photographs rarely show temperature and from looking, you’d never know whether the temperature was in the 70’s or 40’s.  Given we’re in WI, my goodness, of course it was in the 40’s.  To Ryen: thank you for bearing with photos in the cold.  I hope you’ll agree that they’re well worth it!

On a warmer note, Ryen and Jason’s classic, historic church and reception venue reflected an elegant european atmosphere, in both places you could feel they were filled with good memories and stories that started in another era and continue on today.

Congratulations to Ryen and Jason!  Warm Holiday wishes to you and your family!

Wedding at the Waters – Oshkosh, WI

A wedding, a beautifully planned elegant affair at the Waters in Oshkosh, WI, is usually enough to have on one’s plate for the week, but no, Jennifer and Ryan also had moving across the country on the calendar for the week as well.  It seems as though what would be insanely stressful for anyone, was handled with grace and a ton of good humor.

We were thoroughly amused by Ryan’s personable & honest greetings to his work friends as Jennifer and Ryan made the rounds and greeted guests after dinner.  Best wishes to Jennifer and Ryan!  We wish you all the best with everything new!

Homestead Meadows – Appleton, WI Wedding

Believe it or not, Pam and Ken asked for 15 wedding photos…TOTAL.  Since Pam has known me for quite some time, she knew that I (Hillary) am a little exuberant when it comes to photography.  So, the request of only 15 photos has been the wildest wedding request received to date.  How could someone only take 15 photos total of two of the nicest people ever in such a wonderful location?

Homestead Meadows in Appleton, Wisconsin was the perfect location for Pam and Ken’s wedding.  All the details of the day truly fit who they are.  From the vegan menu and cupcakes, to having only homemade beer and wine, all the way to the bluegrass band, everything reflected to who they are.  –A wholeheartedly awesome, fun loving couple!
